How do I prepare my Classic Mini for winter?
Whether you plan to drive your Mini through the colder months or store it safely until spring, proper preparation is essential. Classic Minis are fun, lightweight and full of personality, but winter can be tough on any older car. A little care now will help you avoid rust, damp and mechanical issues in the spring.
Deciding how to handle winter
Before you start prep, decide whether your Classic Mini will be on the road this winter or stored away. With sensible upkeep, Minis can cope well in winter traffic, but if you would rather protect the car from salt, grit and moisture, there are reliable ways to store it safely.
Whichever route you take, a little time spent now can prevent big headaches later.
Preparing your Classic Mini for winter storage
If you’re planning to store your Classic Mini, here’s how to keep it safe, dry and ready to go when the weather warms up.
1. Choose the right storage space
Pick a clean, dry and well-ventilated area such as a garage, carcoon or storage unit. Avoid damp spaces that encourage rust. Regular inspections matter even when the car is indoors, so check occasionally for signs of damp, mould or deterioration.
2. Give your Mini a thorough clean
Wash your Mini inside and out and focus on the undercarriage and wheel arches where salt and grime collect. Rust underneath is the biggest winter enemy, especially if the car went into storage without a perfect clean. Apply a coat of wax, if possible, to protect the paint.
3. Inspect and repair
Look for worn sills, minor rust patches, cracked hoses or any general wear. Small fixes now prevent bigger problems later.
4. Top up and protect fluids
Change the oil and filter according to schedule. Fill the fuel tank and add a fuel stabiliser to prevent clogging and corrosion during storage.
5. Look after the battery
Disconnect the battery to prevent discharge and store it in a cool, dry place. If keeping the battery fitted, use a trickle charger.
6. Protect your tyres
Inflate your tyres to the recommended pressure to prevent flat spots from forming during storage.
7. Cover up properly
Only use a breathable cover. Non breathable covers trap moisture and can cause mould or corrosion even in a garage. If storing the car outdoors, place silica or desiccant packs inside the car to reduce moisture.

Bringing your Classic Mini back out in the spring
When the weather warms up, take a careful approach before heading back on the road.
- Check the oil level and replace it if it looks dirty
- Inspect coolant, brake fluid and clutch fluid and top up as needed
- Examine the tyres for cracks, wear or flattening and inflate to the correct pressure
- Look for leaks or rust under the bonnet and under the car
- Reconnect the battery or remove the trickle charger
- Start the engine gently rather than cranking it immediately
- Allow the engine to warm and settle before driving away
- Take the first drive slowly and listen for unusual noises
Driving your Classic Mini through winter
If you prefer to keep your Mini on the road year-round, a few extra steps will keep it in good shape:
- Wash the car regularly, including the underside, to remove salt and grit
- Keep tyre tread depth healthy and check pressures frequently
- Use winter-grade screen wash to prevent freezing
- Ensure heating and ventilation work properly to reduce interior condensation
- Keep a soft cloth inside to clear the windscreen quickly
- Inspect the underside often because the sills and floor are the first places rust can appear
Small steps such as using silica packs, choosing a breathable cover and warming the car slowly make a real difference. Above all, rust prevention is the most important winter concern.
