Mini Cooper Sport 500 Review
The Mini Cooper Sport 500 is known for being part of the final Mini run in production before the introduction of the revamped BMW Mini series. Rover reported that only 500 were ever produced. Flaunting the highest specification of the final Minis off the Rover line, including full leather trim, alloy dash panel, sportspack arches and 13’’ alloys, makes this model highly-sought after.
In this Mini Cooper Sport 500 review we take a look at an excellent example. Registered in 2001, in the ever iconic British racing green, with platinum silver roof and bonnet stripes, it is the epitome of the Classic Mini.
How to Identify a Genuine Mini Cooper Sport 500
There can be confusion when looking for a genuine Mini Cooper Sport 500. The final Rover production of 2,500 Minis included a Sport model that was not part of the official Sport 500 batch. These Minis had the same body spec, trim spec, and were also available in the same colours; British Racing Green, Tahiti Blue, Solar Red and Anthracite, with a contrasting Platinum Silver roof and bonnet stripes.
Importantly, all genuine 500s came with a bank of four fog and spot lamps, 13” Sportspack alloy wheels and arches, a high-level brake light, leather seats in black and nickel silver, alloy door trim and an engine-turned dash with chrome bezel gauges, and a dash plaque in the glove box compartment stating “This Mini is one the last 500 built to the original Sir Alec Issigonis Design”. In addition, you can check the chassis number.
Mini Cooper Sport 500 John Cooper ‘S Works’ Conversion
Some Mini Cooper Sport 500 models have benefitted from a John Cooper ‘S Works’ conversion, which increases power output from 63bhp to around 85bhp. These are quite rare and make for a powerful addition to the exceptional 500 model.
