1999 classic rover mini cooper s touring sportspack by john cooper garages

As featured in MiniWorld Magazine.

In 1997, John Cooper Garages launched two new exciting iterations of the iconic Mini Cooper S: the Cooper S Touring and the Cooper S Sport 5. Both models were built to deliver immense driving pleasure, featuring advancements such as multi-point fuel injection and other developments from the latest Mk7 Rover Mini. Among the notable John Cooper performance enhancements were a high-compression S-stage cylinder head with enlarged valves, 1:5:1 ratio roller-tip rockers, a high-performance exhaust with 3-branch manifold and Janspeed silencer and a modified fuel pressure regulator. These upgrades increased the power output to 85bhp and reduced the 0-60mph sprint to an impressive 9.95 seconds. The Cooper S Touring distinguished itself by maintaining the Mini's original 4-speed gearbox with taller 2:7 final drive, resulting in more relaxed touring at higher speeds, hence the "Touring" name. Visually, it featured distinctive 'Cooper S Touring' side decals, stainless steel door step covers with 'John Cooper' script, alloy door furniture and a refined burr walnut dashboard and door cappings. The Cooper S Touring could also be specified with Sportspack. Each Mini was fitted with a John Cooper Garages conversion plaque to the crossmember, engraved with its unique car number.

This stunning Mini Cooper S Touring was registered by John Cooper Garages on 22nd January 1999 and is presented in rare Amaranth with a white roof and bonnet stripes, over a Monaco beige and black leatherette interior. The car was also specified with Sportspack, enhancing its sporty appearance, as well as John Cooper clutch and brake pedals. This special Mini features in the August 2025 issue of MiniWorld, and a copy of the magazine is included.

Initially, the Mini was owned by John Cooper Garages for the first eight months, likely serving as a demonstration car, during which it covered 5,896 miles. It was then acquired by its first private owner, who cherished it for approximately eighteen years, concluding their ownership with a recorded mileage of 62,786 miles. Since then, the car has been enthusiast-owned and the odometer currently displays 64,696 miles.

The Mini has clearly been very well cared for, with the accompanying history file indicating that it has primarily been maintained by specialists. The Amaranth paintwork has a beautiful lustre and finish, while the glass, chromework and trim are likewise in excellent condition. Inside, the cabin is in impressive, clean condition, with no tears to the seats, carpet or headlining. Attached to the crossmember resides the John Cooper Garages plaque engraved with car number 118, while the John Cooper Garages dealer sticker remains in situ on the rear screen. The undercarriage has been waxoyl protected, and the MOT history indicates no previous corrosion issues relating to the sills, subframes or underbody. Body-colour vented sills are present both sides. As expected, the 85bhp-converted engine is strong and pulls impeccably and the gear synchros are all in good order with no crunches upon changes.

The Mini is sold newly serviced and MOT’d until 7th March 2026 and is ready to be enjoyed. Supplied with the car is a very detailed and tabulated history file, with pretty much every invoice since the sale from John Cooper Garages in 1999. Additionally, both sets of keys and the original book pack are included, featuring a fully stamped service book.
