The Range Rover L322 – An Insight

The Land Rover Range Rover was launched in 1970 by British Leyland. The first-generation Range Rover (also known as the Range Rover “Classic” or “Suffix-A”) was produced between 1969 and 1996, and was not initially devised as a luxury 4×4. While certainly up-market in comparison to the preceding Land Rover models, the early Suffix-A Range Rovers were merely utility 4×4 vehicles, designed to be washed down with a hose – both inside and out – after desired use.

The third-generation Range Rover (L322) was produced between 2002 and 2012, and saw the model move further up-market. Planned and developed under BMW stewardship, the third-generation initially shared engines and electrical systems with the BMW 7 Series. In 2005, the first exterior face-lift was applied and a new engine line-up was revealed, replacing the mediocre engines and components derived from BMW – a move widely praised by critics. This saw the introduction of the acclaimed Ford Lion 3.6 litre V8 turbodiesel engine (272bhp through a six-speed automatic transmission), arguably the most refined turbodiesel engine of the ongoing Range Rover range.
